According to statistics, a head injury occurs every several seconds across America. In New Mexico, many people have ended up in the hospital because of a traumatic brain injury, or TBI.

There are many possible causes of TBIs: a motor-vehicle accident, sports accident, or domestic violence, for example. The number of people living with a TBI for the rest of their lives is high, but in truth every accident and every injury is unique. Some TBIs leave the victim totally incapacitated. Others have more subtle effects that nonetheless interfere with a victim’s ability to work for a living the way they did before the accident.

Fortunately, there are organizations that can help.

What is BIANM?

The Brain Injury Alliance of New Mexico (BIANM) offers support to the injured and their families. For more than 30 years, the nonprofit organization has provided resources and services to people living with TBIs.

BIANM consists of volunteers, including people who suffer the effects of a TBI as well as other individuals. The organization sponsors conferences, provides support groups, and helps to reintroduce people who suffer from TBIs back into their communities. Additionally, they are advocates for safety laws and have been instrumental in helping to get some of those laws passed.
