How to avoid distractions while driving

Distracted driving is a common cause of accidents on New Mexico roadways. Generally speaking, anything that causes you to take your focus off the road can be considered a distraction. Fortunately, there are steps that you can take to minimize your risk of talking, eating or doing anything else potentially hazardous while your car is in motion.

Choose the proper settings before you start driving

Before leaving for your destination, make sure that the radio, temperature settings and other features have been adjusted to your liking. This will reduce the odds that you take your eyes off the road for even a few seconds while traveling to your next destination. If you need to use your phone as a GPS, be sure to program the directions while sitting in your driveway or while pulled over to the side of the road.

Give yourself plenty of time to get ready

Waking up a few minutes earlier in the morning may allow you to eat breakfast before leaving for work or school. It may also allow you to enjoy a cup of coffee at your kitchen table instead of in the car during your commute. Getting up on time may also ensure that you can get dressed, apply makeup or take care of other minor tasks in a safe manner rather than in the car.

Ignore your passengers

It’s generally not a good idea to engage in conversation with passengers while your car is moving. If you find it difficult to ignore your passengers, it may be best to simply travel without them. In some states, newly licensed drivers are required to drive on their own without teen passengers because it reduces their risk of causing auto accidents to occur.

If you have been involved in an accident caused by a distracted driver, you may be entitled to compensation. A financial award might help to pay medical bills, recoup lost wages or help make up for other losses incurred as the result of a negligent driver’s actions. An attorney may be able to help you obtain a favorable settlement or jury award.
